THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Updated December 30th, 2021, by Charles Burgar: We've been hard at work updating our Destiny 2 build guides since the 30th Anniversary Pack was released. Today, we'll be looking at a few new Warlock builds for PvE and PvP that are sure to impress. If infinite overshields in PvP or unmatched add-clear in PvE sound up your alley, give our new builds a look. We've also made some organizational changes to make this article easier to navigate. Use the table of contents above to find builds that interest you.

Foreword

Before we begin, each build guide is rather long and covers Combat Style mods—seasonal mods that offer powerful effects. If you aren't familiar with these mods, you'll want to read our guides on each Combat Style mechanic. We also have a guide on Armor 2.0 if you haven't played with Destiny 2's mod system yet. Each guide is linked below:

PvP: Firing Squad

Destiny 2 No Time To Explain Build

Why Play This Build?

Are you tired of playing with teammates that can't aim? Say hello to No Time to Explain, an Exotic Pulse Rifle that creates a time portal that fires at enemies with incredible accuracy. With the Stormcaller subclass, you can also summon an Arc Soul or "Arc Buddy" to team-shot every enemy that dares approach you. Who needs teammates when you can make a weapons platform at will?

Time to kill values are extremely low when your portal and Arc Soul are active, and you have access to a fantastic Super in the form of Chaos Reach. If you hate PvP but need to complete 6v6 weeklies, give this build a try.

Essentials

Subclass Attunement of Control (Middle Tree Stormcaller)
Exotic Getaway Artist OR The Stag
Weapon No Time to Explain

Attunement of Control (Middle Tree Stormcaller) gives you access to a powerful ranged melee, Ionic Traces that grant ability energy for each kill, and one of the best PvP Supers in the form of Chaos Reach. Feel free to use Bottom Tree Stormcaller if you're using The Stag. Regardless of subclass, use Storm Grenades; they have the lowest cooldown of all three Stormcaller grenades.

Getaway Artist will be your Exotic armor piece, allowing you to consume your grenade in exchange for a Sentient Arc Soul for 20 seconds. This Arc Soul fires more projectiles more quickly and accurately than a standard Arc Soul. If you're playing Competitive PvP or Trials of Osiris, consider using The Stag instead.

No Time to Explain will be your weapon of choice. Masterwork it to increase the lethality of your time portal. Good backup weapons include Shotguns, Grenade Launchers, and any Legendary with Demolitionist.

Discipline is your most important stat in this build, allowing you to recharge your grenade every 32 seconds with 100 Discipline. Combining this with Ionic Traces and Bomber, you can have a Sentient Arc Soul active for nearly every gunfight. Recovery is a good second stat to invest in.

These mods focus on getting your grenade back as fast as possible. A single Grenade Kickstart will give you a solid chunk of energy once you create a Sentient Arc Soul, although we feel using two Grenade Kickstarts doesn't provide enough of a benefit to warrant using eight energy on your armor. Supplement your grenade conversions with a Rift cast to take advantage of double Bomber, granting nearly half of your grenade back.

PvP: Necrotic Breach

Destiny 2 Necrotic Grip

Why Play This Build?

Middle Tree Voidwalker saw a buff in Season of the Lost, making Nova Warp a good Super while also buffing the charge time allowed on Handheld Supernova. Most players know of the synergy between this tree and Contraverse Hold, but there's a far more powerful pairing that goes unnoticed: Necrotic Grip.

These gloves allow your melee to one-shot Guardians in PvP, granting ability energy and a small chunk of HP after a kill. You also have a chargeable grenade that can finish off weakened opponents, giving you tons of options for close-range duels. The best part is the poison spreads after a kill, allowing highly aggressive players to clear out a small group of enemy Guardians with enough skill. It's a high-risk, high-reward playstyle that Warlock mains should try at least once.

Note: Handheld Supernova can still one-shot Guardians in PvP if they're running towards the grenade on detonation. This is most likely a bug. Until it gets fixed, use Handheld Supernova against Shotgun/Fusion rushers to shut them down.

Essentials

Subclass Attunement of Fission (Middle Tree Voidwalker)
Exotic Necrotic Grip
Weapon Thorn, Traveler's Chosen, or Monte Carlo

Attunement of Fission (Middle Tree Voidwalker) is much stronger this season. Nova Warp is a great roaming Super, Handheld Supernova is solid for zoning or killing weakened opponents, and your melee can one-shot with Nectoric Grip. Each ability kill will also grant 15% melee energy, 10% grenade and Rift energy, and you'll gain a small amount of HP.

Related: Destiny 2: The Best Titan Builds For PvP And PvE

Necrotic Grip causes your charged melee attacks to poison targets, dealing increased damage over time. This will make your melee one-shot and cause the target to explode twice, dealing Void AoE and poison DoT damage to anyone nearby.

You have multiple weapon options for this build. Thorn and Necrotic Grip have an unlisted synergy that causes Thorn's DoTs to spread after a kill, making it absurd for countering Rift builds. Traveler's Chosen is great for shutting down aggressive players and fueling your abilities. Monte Carlo is a solid dueling weapon that gives you near-infinite melee charges. Pick any weapon that suits your playstyle.

PvP: Umbral Shadebinder

Destiny 2 Shadebinder

Why Play This Build?

Shadebinders are incredibly strong in PvP, capable of stopping opponents in their tracks using their grenades, melee ability, and Super. This build enhances ability uptime by using Claws of Ahamkara and numerous ability-enhancing armor mods. You'll have the ability to shutdown Supers, Shotgun rushers, and swing 1v1 gunfights in your favor with little issue.

Essentials

Subclass Shadebinder (Stasis)
Exotic Claws of Ahamkara
Weapon Monte Carlo; anything with Wellspring

Shadebinder is what you'll be using. We'll cover the Aspects and Fragments in the next section.

Claws of Ahamkara give you two melee charges. Winning 1v1 engagements becomes much easier with this Exotic.

Monte Carlo is excellent here, giving you constant melee charges. 600 RPM Auto Rifles are still competitive in today's sandbox, so long as you can engage at medium distances. Beyond that, use weapons with Wellspring.

Aspects And Fragments

Iceflare Bolts and Glacial Harvest are fantastic, giving you great control over gunfights in PvP and the ability to make melee-generating Stasis shards.

Aspect Description
Iceflare Bolts Shattering a frozen target spawns seekers that track and freeze other nearby targets.
Glacial Harvest Freezing targets creates Stasis shards around the frozen targets. Higher tier combatants create more shards.

Related: Destiny 2: The Best Hunter Builds For PvP And PvE

You'll have four Fragment slots. This setup maximizes the value of Stasis shards.

Fragment Description Stat Alterations

Bonds Defeating frozen targets grants you Super energy. -10 Intellect and Discipline

PvP: Divine Flame

Destiny 2 Well of Radiance

Why Play This Build?

When Bungie implemented unique ability cooldowns with the 30th Anniversary Pack, they gave each grenade a unique cooldown. Dawnblade Warlocks saw a massive cooldown reduction to Firebolt Grenades, allowing them to be used as a catalyst for activating neutral game buffs like Heat Rising.

Turns out Firebolt Grenades are also incredibly strong for activating Divine Protection from Attunement of Flame. This build focuses on reducing your grenade cooldown as much as possible to give you access to a pocket overshield that affects you and any nearby teammates. You'll have incredibly fast ability cooldowns, a counter to Stasis with Well of Radiance, and you'll be helping your team while using this build. If you have multiple members of your team running this build, it'll be incredibly difficult to lose.

Essentials

Subclass Attunement of Grace (Middle Tree Dawnblade)
Exotic Preference
Weapon Any weapon

Attunement of Grace (Middle Tree Dawnblade) has a mechanic where you can overcharge your grenade to heal yourself and nearby allies, granting an ability regen buff called Benevolent Dawn. We'll be using Firebolt Grenades to achieve the shortest cooldown possible to maximize our uptime with this overshield and Benevolent Dawn.

Since no Exotic is needed to enable this synergy, use any Exotic you like. Neutral game powerhouses like Transversive Steps and Ophidian Aspects are highly recommended if you want to enhance your Warlock's neutral game. If you want to get a little more experimental, Boots of the Assembler and Eye of Another World pair nicely with this build.

Any weapon works here. Use whatever you're most comfortable with or what's meta.

PvP: Icarus Dawnblade

Destiny-2-Dawnblade

Why Play This Build?

Movement separates good players from great players in Destiny's Crucible. Closing the gap and moving with confidence are critical to winning against more skilled teams, hence why virtually every Warlock in the Crucible plays top tree Dawnblade.

This build utilizes Charged with Light mods and popular Warlock Exotics to make you the fastest, deadliest killing machine you can be. If you want to focus more on countering enemies, use the Radiant Chaos build discussed earlier. If you want to become an all-out aggressive Guardian that can't be touched, this is the build for you.

Essentials

Subclass Attunement of Sky (Top Tree Dawnblade)
Exotic Transversive Steps OR Ophidian Aspects
Weapon Any weapon

Attunement of Sky (Top Tree Dawnblade) grants mid-air dashes, perfect in-air accuracy with the Heat Rising buff, and you get a decent Super in the form of Daybreak. Celestial Fire is arguably the best melee ability for Warlocks as well, damaging targets around cover and from quite a distance.

Transversive Steps and Ophidian Aspects are the best neutral-game Exotics you can rock for this build. Most argue that Tranversive Steps are better due to their increased sprint speed and auto-reloading properties. Their handling and reload boost are hard to top. Karnstein Armlets are also an excellent choice if you're OK with sacrificing general buffs for survivability.

One more Exotic we want to mention is Starfire Protocol. This chest piece grants a second Fusion Grenade. Fusions aren't anything to write home about, but this allows you to activate Heat Rising two times in a row, allowing for excellent hang time with a Sniper Rifle or other long-range weapons. The outplay potential with this Exotic is too good not to mention.

Any weapon can work with this build, but there are a few that get a plethora of benefits as a Dawnblade. Specific examples include Dead Man's Tale, Sniper Rifles, Felwinter's Lie, and Hand Cannons. In essence, if it's meta, it's even better on this build due to Heat Rising.

Armor Stats

Mobility Preference
Resilience 50
Recovery 90+
Discipline 50+
Intellect 70+
Strength ~50

Intellect is the most important stat in competitive PvP. The sooner you cast your Super, the sooner your teammates get theirs. Recovery and Discipline are also great stats to maximize. If you can get all three stats to 100, you'll be tough to kill.

Destiny 2 - Beyond Light Best Weapons And Exotics Page Break

PvE: Landfall's Brace

Why Play This Build?

Bottom Tree Stormcaller got a massive buff in Season of the Lost. Landfall hits like a truck, Arc Soul is stronger than ever, and the movement speed buff from Electrostatic Surge feels incredible. This build takes all of those elements to the extreme.

Related: The Best Exotics For Warlocks In Destiny 2, Ranked

Through the use of Elemental Wells and the new Stasis armor mods, you can obtain your Super in a matter of seconds, allowing you to effectively spam Landfall. With an Arc Soul at your side and infinite Rifts, you'll be able to vaporize every enemy into atoms with little issue.

Essentials

Subclass Attunement of the Elements (Bottom Tree Stormcaller)
Exotic Stormdancer's Brace
Weapon Riskrunner

Attunement of the Elements (Bottom Tree Stormcaller) has a devastating Super with the Landfall node. If you land all five projectiles on top of an enemy, your Super can easily one-shot most enemies and build up stacks of Stormcaller's Brace.

Stormcaller's Brace ramps up your Super, making it deal double damage at x10 stacks while granting 50% of your Super back after Stormtrance ends. Landfall can build up stacks of this buff right when your Super starts, giving you a kickstart to your damage stacks.

Riskrunner gives some much-needed damage resistance and add-clear when you aren't spamming your Super. It can also spawn Elemental Wells if Elemental Armamants is equipped. You can force Arc Conductor to proc by throwing a Pulse Grenade at your feet.

You can also replace Font of Wisdom with Well of Striking or Bountiful Wells if you want more melee energy whenever you spawn a Well. For harder content, we recommend using Grenade Wellmaker instead of Melee Wellmaker.

PvE: Mantle Of Shards

Destiny 2 Mantle of Battle Harmony

Why Play This Build?

Inspired by Ehroar's 30th Anniversary Stasis build, this build focuses on turning the Shadebinder subclass into the strongest add-clearing subclass the Warlock has access to. By utilizing the Headstone perk and various Stasis Aspects and Fragments, your Warlock will be able to clear entire rooms of enemies with a few bullets.

The sheer power of Shadebinder is then pushed further with Elemental Wells, Stasis weapons, and the Mantle of Battle Harmony Exotic chest piece. You'll have great crowd control, short Super and grenade cooldowns, and two constant damage buffs.

Essentials

Subclass Shadebinder (Stasis)
Exotic Mantle of Battle Harmony
Weapon Eyasluna, anything with Headstone

Shadebinder will be your subclass. We'll cover Aspects and Fragments in the next section. For your grenade, run Glacier Grenades. Your grenade cooldown will be so short that its base cooldown won't matter, and the buff to Glacier explosions in the 30th Anniversary Pack turned these grenades into the ultimate add-clear tool.

Mantle of Battle Harmony is better than Verity's Brow in our eyes for this particular build. Whisper of Fissures and Elemental Wells already give us low ability cooldowns, so this build needs Super regen and damage. Mantle of Battle Harmony kills two birds with one stone, charging your Super faster with Stasis kills or granting a 20% Stasis damage buff while your Super is charged.

Eyasluna is hands-down the best weapon for this build. It can roll with Headstone and Unrelenting simultaneously, healing you whenever Headstone kills someone. You don't need Unrelenting for Eyasluna to be good; it just needs Headstone. Some good alternatives include Vulpecula, Peacebond, and Reed's Regret. We especially recommend you use Reed's Regret if you have it, as the weapon's DPS skyrockets when all of your buffs are active.

Aspects And Fragments

Aspect Description
Glacial Harvest Freezing targets creates Stasis shards around the frozen targets. Higher tier combatants create more shards.
Iceflare Bolts Shattering a frozen target spawns seekers that track and freeze other nearby targets.

Iceflare Bolts is mandatory. This causes Headstone to proliferate its freezing effect if it freezes a target—something that happens quite frequently. Glacial Harvest is a tough sell due to its internal cooldown, but it's your best alternative to Bleak Watcher (Frostpulse is ill-suited for endgame content). If you want to spam Bleak Watcher turrets instead, see our Bleak Flame build at the end of this guide. It's more tailored towards that type of play style.

Fragment Description Stat Alterations
Fissures Increases the damage and size of the burst of Stasis when you destroy a Stasis crystal or defeat a frozen target. N/A
Shards Shattering a Stasis crystal increases your grenade recharge rate for a short time. Subsequent crystal detonations extend the duration of this buff up to 10 seconds. +10 Resilience
Rending Kinetic weapons deal 50% more damage to Stasis crystals and frozen targets. N/A
Impetus Instantly reload all of your weapons and gain +100 handling for 5 seconds upon hitting an enemy with your charged melee ability. N/A

Whisper of Fissures and Shards are no-brainers here. Fissures will make Headstone crystals deal significantly more damage over a wider area, and Shards will help recharge your Glacier Greandes quickly. Rending might seem like an odd pick, but this allows Eyasluna and other Kinetic weapons to break Stasis crystals with a single bullet. Without it, this build feels much clunkier. Finally, we're using Whisper of Hedrons to obtain Icarus Grip on all weapons while improving a few weapon and character stats. You'll be freezing targets so frequently that Hedrons will almost always be active.

Whisper of Impetus is completely optional. The final Fragment slot is down to taste. Here are some good alternatives:

  • Whisper of Chains: Gain 40% damage resistance while near a Stasis crystal.
    • Highly recommended for Master/GM Nightfalls.
    • Stacks multiplicatively with Protective Light and other DR sources.
  • Whisper of Hedrons: Gain +50 Mobility, Resilience, Recovery, increased weapon aim assist, increased weapon stability, and Icarus Grip on all weapons for 12 seconds upon freezing a target.
    • This effect is almost always active if you consistently proc Headstone.
  • Whisper of Hunger: Stasis Shards give 20% melee energy, from 10%.

You have quite a few options for your Bond. Double Outreach is nice for getting Penumbral Blast back quickly. If you're playing any content with Champions, we highly recommend using Resonance Siphon and Thermoclastic Strike. A single Overload stun will give you a ton of energy for all of your abilities. Of course, you can always run Particle Deconstruction if you want to increase the DPS of Reed's Regret or any Special Fusion Rifle you might be running.

Note: The mods listed below can be placed in any armor you choose, so long as the elemental affinity matches.
Helmet Taking Charge / Font of Wisdom
Gloves Elemental Shards

Glacial Harvest will periodically create Stasis shards when you freeze opponents, pairing perfectly with Elemental Shards. We then gain x2 Charged with Light by using Elemental Charge, allowing us to use Charged with Light mods. We'll be using Heavy Handed to gain 50% melee energy whenever Penumbral Blast is used. When paired with Melee Kickstart and the shards you'll be grabbing, Penumbral Blast shouldn't have a long cooldown.

For the other two slots, Font of Might is a must. This grants a 25% damage buff to all Stasis weapons that stacks with Mantle of Battle Harmony, drastically improving the damage of weapons like Eyasluna and Reed's Regret. The final slot is up to you. Taking Charge gives you a second avenue of gaining Charged with Light. Font of Wisdom sets your Intellect to 100 for 30 seconds upon grabbing a Stasis shard, making your Super charge much faster. You can even use Elemental Time Dilation to extend the duration of Font of Might to offset the inconsistency of Glacial Harvest. Play around with your mod setup to see what fits your playstyle the best.

PvE: Chaotic Hold

Destiny Voidwalker Super.

Why Play This Build?

Have you wondered what most top-tier players use to solo dungeons and other pinnacle content? It's this build. In essence, you'll be using Controverse Hold and Attunement of Chaos to throw constant supercharged Vortex Grenades, turning even the toughest of enemies into stardust. It's a low-risk, high-reward build that virtually every player can use.

You can take this build even further with Combat Style mods. This build can take full advantage of either Warmind Cells or Elemental Wells, allowing you to enhance your ability cooldowns or general add-clearing potential. It's easy to build, deals immense amounts of damage, and can be used in Destiny 2's toughest activities.

Essentials

Attunement of Chaos (Top Tree Voidwalker) allows you to overcharge your grenades, giving them increased duration and much more damage. Pair this subclass with Vortex Grenades for devastating results.

Contraverse Hold is mandatory. These gloves are what allow you to spam grenades, granting a random amount of grenade energy whenever your grenades damage someone. Since Vortex Grenades persist for multiple seconds, Contraverse Hold activates multiple times in one grenade.

PvE: Warmind's Grace

Destiny 2 Well of Radiance

Why Play This Build?

Combining lethality with support, this build is the ultimate PvE Warlock build for all Destiny 2 content. Normal strikes? Clear entire arenas with little issue. Grandmaster Nightfalls? Keep your team alive with constant healing effects and a powerful Well of Radiance Super. Thanks to Warmind Cells, Warlocks can become aggressive healers that blend Destiny 2's core gameplay with the power fantasy of being a support player. Of course, if you don't like how Warmind Cells perform after their nerf in Season of the Lost, Elemental Well mods are just as powerful.

Essentials

Subclass Attunement of Grace (Middle Tree Dawnblade)
Exotic Boots of the Assembler OR Lunafaction Boots
Weapon Anything that can spawn Warmind Cells

Attunement of Grace (Middle Tree Dawnblade) is the star of the show, granting constant abilities so long as you heal your allies. Well of Radiance is also an excellent Super for hunkering down or preparing for a raid boss DPS phase.

Lunafaction Boots, Phoenix Protocol, and Boots of the Assembler are great support options if you're playing pinnacle content with a team. We recommend Boots of the Assembler for most content, as it heals or empowers your allies with little input from you while activating Benevolent Dawn.

IKELOS and Seventh Seraph weapons allow you to spawn Warmind Cells after a few kills. If you own Wrath of Rasputin, consider using Ticcu's Divination, Xenophage, or Sunshot.

Lumina also pairs nicely with this build, healing allies and granting everyone a massive 35% damage buff. This gun procs Benevolent Dawn, giving you incredible ability regeneration rates whenever you use Lumina to heal an ally.

This loadout is very flexible. Ashes to Assets is our only major recommendation, as you can throw so many grenades that you'll be able to recharge your Super much faster than normal. Beyond that, use any mods that you enjoy or are meta for the given season.

Armor Mods (Combat Style)

Note: The mods listed below can be placed in any armor you choose, so long as the elemental affinity matches.
Warmind Cells Elemental Wells
Helmet Rage of the Warmind Helmet Explosive Wellmaker
Gloves Fireteam Medic Gloves Supercharged / Charged Up
Robes Global Reach Robes Elemental Charge
Boots Warmind's Protection Boots Protective Light
Bond Wrath of Rasputin Bond Bountiful Wells

With the Warmind Cell setup, your Warmind Cells will spawn from Solar splash damage (including Warmind Cell explosions themselves), and every Warmind Cell will heal allies. This procs Benevolent Dawn, giving you ability energy whenever you destroy a Warmind Cell.

If you'd rather use Elemental Wells, Explosive Wellmaker will let your AoE weapons and grenades spawn Elemental Wells. You can also replace Explosive Wellmaker with Grenade Wellmaker if you aren't using explosive weapons. These Wells will give Charged with Light, allowing you to proc Protective Light when your shields break. The 50% DR is especially powerful on this build since you can create an overshield with an overcharged grenade.

PvE: Bleak Flame

Destiny 2 Shadebinder Super

Why Play This Build?

Raw firepower isn't always the answer. Sometimes, all you need is a little bit of crowd control to turn the tide. That's what this build focuses on. By using the Bleak Watcher Aspect, Shadebinders can turn their grenades into Stasis turrets that reliably freeze enemies. This build focuses on fast grenade cooldowns so you can spawn as many of these turrets as possible, making this an excellent build for Grandmaster Nightfalls, Master Lost Sectors, and raids.

Bungie might have nerfed the cooldown rates of Bleak Watcher in the 30th Anniversary Pack, but there are still a few ways to enhance the cooldown of your turrets. So long as you're willing to farm for a good Stasis weapon, this build is still more than viable for all Destiny content, including raids and GM Nightfalls.

Essentials

Subclass Shadebinder (Stasis)
Exotic Verity's Brow OR Eye of Another World
Weapon Headstone Legendaries OR Le Monarque

Shadebiner is required to spawn Bleak Watcher turrets. We'll cover the Aspects and Fragments in the next section.

Verity's Brow is excellent for content where you aren't significantly underleveled. Killing enemies with your Energy weapon will significantly speed up your grenade cooldown. If you're attempting Grandmaster Nightfalls, consider using Eye of Another World instead. It lowers all ability cooldowns passively, making it a solid choice if you can't maintain Verity's Brow's perk.

Anything with Headstone is absurdly strong on this build, allowing you to proc Whisper of Shards and Verity's Brow. Eyasluna is a notable Stasis weapon, capable of rolling with Headstone and Unrelenting simultaneously. It also assists with AoE add-clear. Le Monarque is a good long-range option for quickly shattering a group of enemies.

Aspects And Fragments

These Aspects allow you to overcharge your grenade, creating Bleak Watcher turrets. Enemies frozen by the turrets will freeze nearby targets as well.

Aspect Description
Bleak Watcher Press and hold the grenade button to convert your grenade into a Stasis turret that fires slowing projectiles at nearby targets.
Iceflare Bolts Shattering a frozen target spawns seekers that track and freeze other nearby targets.

You can use four Fragments. This build will use Fragments that enhance the effect of Stasis shatters, your ability cooldowns, and the duration of Bleak Watchers themselves thanks to Whisper of Durance.

Fragment Description Stat Alterations
Fissures Increases the damage and size of the burst of Stasis when you destroy a Stasis crystal or defeat a frozen target. N/A
Shards Shattering Stasis grants faster grenade recharge time. Buff cannot exceed a 10-second duration. +10 Resilience
Bonds Defeating frozen targets grants you Super energy. -10 Intellect and Discipline
Rending Kinetic weapons deal 50% more damage to Stasis crystals and frozen targets. N/A

Armor Mods (Combat Style)

Note: The mods listed below can be placed in any armor you choose, so long as the elemental affinity matches.
Helmet Taking Charge
Gloves Firepower
Robes Firepower
Boots Firepower
Bond Firepower

Firepower's effect stacks the more mods you have equipped. Four will grant 60% grenade energy upon throwing your grenade.

If you don't own Firepower, Elemental Well mods make for a solid substitute. Elemental Armaments with an Osmosis/Headstone weapon will create Stasis wells that will reduce your grenade cooldown by 10% per well. Should you use Elemental Wells, the other three Firepower mods can be replaced with Elemental Well mods that suit your playstyle.
