Creating a good build can be the difference between an easy and brutal playthrough in Dark Souls 3. Some playstyles are much easier to build around than others, hence why From Software brought back Dark Souls 2's respec system into the third installment.
It works a little differently in this installment, now being tied to a Covenant that's somewhat hidden from you. If you can get past that, you can salvage any bad build in Dark Souls 3 by respeccing your character. Today, we'll be going over how to do just that. Let's go over how to respec your character, where to find this Covenant NPC, and how you can farm a currency needed to respec your build.
Updated August 29th, 2021, by Charles Burgar: Creating a good build in Dark Souls 3 takes time and planning. Sometimes, plans can go sideways and result in a playstyle you aren't happy with. That's where character respecs come in. We've updated this guide with more information on how respeccing works in Dark Souls 3, how to reach Rosaria's Chamber, and the best way you can farm Pale Tongues—a currency tied to respeccing your character.
How To Respec Your Character
You can respec your character by speaking to Rosaria, the leader of the Rosaria's Fingers Covenant. She's a hidden NPC located on the second floor of the Cathedral of the Deep. In her dialogue menu, select the "Reallocate Attributes" option to respec your allocated stats.
There are two restrictions tied to this system:
- You can only redistribute points you've invested since character creation; you can't reinvest points tied to your starting class.
- You can only respec your character five times per NG cycle.
|Note: You do not need to be part of the Rosaria's Fingers Covenant to respec your character. This option is available to everyone.|
Pale Tongues, Restrictions, And Sirris' Questline
Before you go searching for her, you'll need at least one Pale Tongue to respec your character. This is a rare Covenant item that you can obtain through the following:
- Found throughout the world
- 3 per NG cycle, 2 of which are in the Cathedral
- Guaranteed upon a successful invasion
- Chance to drop upon defeating a Darkwraith
If you don't fancy exploration or PvP, you'll want to farm Darkwraiths to respec your character (explained later). Beyond owning a Pale Tongue, there's also one additional restriction to respeccing your character: you can only respec your character 5 times per NG cycle.
It's also worth noting that respeccing your character will fail Sirris of the Sunless Realm's questline. Since she's opposed to Rosaria, presenting a Pale Tongue to Rosaria for any reason will automatically fail Sirris' questline. If you want to obtain her items on your current playthrough, consider finishing her quest first before you respec your character.
How To Reach Rosaria, Mother Of Rebirth
You can find Rosaria when you reach the rafters encounter in the Cathedral. If you've already cleared the area, you can take the tower shortcut left of the "Cleansing Chapel" bonfire to reach the rooftop and rafters. Right as you enter the Cathedral rafters, you'll want to run towards the knight wielding an ultra greatsword near the left-side of the rafters. At the end of that rafter, drop down to the platform below. If you're near a ton of slugs, you're in the right place.
Push through the slugs to find a set of double doors you can open, revealing Rosaria's chamber. A bonfire is right next to Rosaria for your convenience. The next time you need to respec or level her Covenant, you can simply travel to her chambers.
Farming Pale Tongues
There's a way to repeatedly farm Pale Tongues if you aren't interested in PvP. Travel to the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire, the bonfire just before the Abyss Watchers boss fight. Two Darkwraiths will always spawn from one end of the forests. Each Darkwraith has a chance of dropping a Pale Tongue. Rest at the same bonfire and repeat the process until you have the desired amount of Pale Tongues.
To speed up this farm, you'll want to increase your Item Discovery stat as much as possible. You have a few ways of doing this:
- Increase your Luck stat
- Grants +1 Item Discovery per point.
- Equip Item Discovery items
- Covetous Gold Serpent Ring +3: +115 Item Discovery
- Symbol of Avarice: +100 Item Discovery
- Crystal Sage's Rapier: +50 Item Discovery
- Use a Rusted or Gold Coin
- Rusted Coin: +50 Item DIscovery
- Gold Coin: +100 Item Discovery
